Kansas crops

Tuesday – got started in the fog this a.m about 8:30.

Longer day today 350 miles with a stop at a rest area for coffee and another stop for lunch. Arrived at the campground at 4:00. This time of year sure makes traveling easier – most of the campgrounds are pretty empty. We’re in a 90 space KOA and there are only 15 spaces filled. We are just west of Hays, Kansas. About 120 miles from Colorado border.
Weather was okay. Light rain and sunshine back and forth all day. Still haven’t got the windshield wipers! Could see a bad storm in the distance but it bypassed us.
We did get quite a bit of wind though. Poor Jennie gets pushed around more than the Alfa. Not bad enough to stop but bad enough to get tiring driving in it.
Saw more corn – must have been planted earlier as it is already brown and dry.
Also some kind of crop we wonder what it is. I remember seeing it in Mexico too.
Will try to find out its name.
One of the signs along the road said, “One Kansas Farmer feeds 128 people + you.” Thought that was kind of neat.
Then there was a “wind farm” went on for many miles.
And one more crop (wouldn’t mind having some of it.)
Lots of flowers in bloom along side the road – especially the Black Eyed Susans. They are so pretty.
One section of the road was a toll road – that was a surprise – between Kansas City and Topeka. Only $3.75 though – not like the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Along it we passed a burned up tractor trailer. The police were still there – what a mess it will be to clean up.
Another new thing we saw. Across the road just before a sharp turn was a sign that said “Driving too Fast When Flashing” and sure enough if you were going faster than 45 the lights flashed. As we went by all the lights for all the lanes were flashing. Oh well.
Have been wondering something for a while. In fact since before we left Indiana. During the spring and early summer we saw lots of “road kill” – possums, squirrels, turtles, and dear. –No raccoons. In the last couple of weeks it seems like every few miles there’s a squished raccoon. What’s the deal? Is it mating season now? Have they all decided to move to another area? Is it raccoon season for cars? Why??? No, no pictures of them.
When we checked in to this campground the lady in the office told me that the Wi-fi “comes and goes.” I said yeh I knew how that was as ours at home does the same thing. NOT! When she said “comes and goes” she meant it comes and goes as fast as you can say “comes and goes.” So don’t know if I’ll be able to post this or not. Very frustrating. Of course while I’m typing this off line it has been connected the whole time. GRRRR….
We are slowly adjusting to living in Jennie. I am being very careful of my tor soe. Keeping it out of Bill’s way and trying not to bump into anything. The bruising of the foot is almost gone but the toe itself is still pretty black and today the foot swelled up quite a bit. Guess it will take a while. Why do I always do these things just before leaving on a trip where I know I’ll be doing a lot of walking? Why?
Bill asked me if I wanted to drive today – in the rain? Don’t think so. I will try someday – maybe. Sure seems strange to be so low to the ground. Like being in the Jeep. And Bill has to remember that he isn’t “The Biggest” any more. No more intimidation with size.

Just a neat scene I got a shot of

Tomorrow Colorado.

  1. Carol, I broke my little toe the first week in July & it looked just like yours. Over 2 months later it's still "cranky" and only likes certain shoes. And when I walked on the beach this weekend I paid dearly for it later in the day -- little thing looked like a little smoky sausage! Hang in there -- it'll feel better ... eventually.

  2. Great to learn you two are back on the road again. We have other cyber friends traveling from Colorado to Florida (family wedding). You probably passed them in Kansas. It seems Jenny is handling well enough even with Willy wagging along behind. Sorry to hear about your foot injury. Ouch! Don't you just hate that? Usually with me its a nock on the noggin.

    Have fun and be safe.
