Leaving Las Vegas

Leaving Las Vegas Tuesday morning turned out to be a bigger project then we thought it would be. The Driver had arranged to have Jennie’s oil and transmission fluids and filters changed at a place right next door to the RV park. So we got up and packed up and left the park. We were going to leave Jennie to get the work done have breakfast and go back and pick her up and be on our way.
We started towards the restaurant but pulled into a tire place?? Bill jumped out and went inside??? He came back out and told me to get out of the jeep as they were going to rotate the tires. No problem, it was just unexpected. So we waited while that was done then went to breakfast. We like to eat at the Blueberry Hill restaurants in Vegas - not fancy just a lot of good food.
Back to the shop where Jennie was. Bill got out and talked to the mechanics. Everything was fine with Jennie now. Mechanic said she must have the same oil and tranny fluid she had put in in 1997! Both were like paste. Now she should be happy. More talk with mechanic. Then Bill came back to me and said we were going to get new brakes on the Jeep. When they rotated the tires he looked at them and didn’t like what he saw. Okay – we were in no hurry any way. Jennie was backed out and Willie was pulled in. I sat in Jennie and read a book. Ended up getting both front and back brakes.
So at 11:30 we finally got on the road.
Have you ever noticed when driving through the western states that there will be an exit to a town sign
and there is no town any where in sight. And if there was why would any one want to live in that area? Nothing but rocks and little bushes for miles and miles.
Just wondering. Another "Why?" town.
We passed through Mesquite on the NV/AZ border. Looks funny the side of the highway the town is on is all nice and green
the other side of the highway is barren hills.
Amazing what a little water can do.
Down through the Virgin River Canyon – that is sure an ugly piece of real estate.
Passed by a fire beside the road. Lots of police and fireman working on it.
Looked like they about had it out. Don’t think there was much there to burn anyway.
Then into Utah. Scenery started to get prettier.
I just love Joshua Trees. They have such great shapes. We passed through Saint George, it looks like it is still growing. We stopped at a rest stop just before Cedar City. Had a snack and got out and stretched a little.
We continued on through Cedar City and were going over a very rough stretch of highway when there was a terrible thumping and banging and jolting from the back of Jennie. "What happened?" from me. "We lost a tire tread," came the calm reply from The Driver as he slowed down and pulled to the side. The tread had come off the left rear outside tire.
He got out and checked. No real damage to anything just some black marks on her pretty newly polished paint
and the inside tire was fine. Luckily we were just at the outskirts of the town and were able to slowly get to the next off ramp and call around to find a tire. One place in town had the right size. So we plodded through town to the store and had the tire replaced. And we were lucky as we had forgotten we were into the Mountain Time Zone and it was almost 5:00 – a few more minutes and they would have been closed. So except for the marks on Jennie’s side and a piece of metal that came off of one of the exterior doors no damage done. Thank goodness.
After a very expensive stop (now she has all new tires) we were on our way again. By then we were fighting a strong head wind all the way into Beaver, UT where we spent the night in a nice KOA. Up at 6000 feet it was also starting to get cold. Had to turn the heater on for a while.
Off and running Wednesday morning. We picked up the I-70 just outside of Beaver and kept on it right across Utah. One stretch of it for 110 miles has no services.
That’s a pretty long stretch with no stations. Really a nice drive though. Lots of varied scenery. From forests to red mesas
and some really weird domes
to gray rock mounds jutting up out of no whereand yellow domes popping up throughout the desert.
Some of the trees are already bright orange or yellow.
Lots of farming going on – according to the signs - melons. That surprised me.
We dropped off of I-70 to go south to Moab, UT. Love that area. Spent two days there.
